Did you know that over 95% of Earth’s animals aren’t furry, feathered, or finned? And that most don’t even have a backbone?
Join Casey and Katie, a couple of entomologists, educators, and best friends, as they explore the planet’s largest group of animals – invertebrates! In each biweekly episode of Frass Happens, the two share wild facts and stories about the “little things that run the world” and hope to turn their listeners into lovers of ALL animals (not just the furry ones).
Meet your Hosts!

Casey Johnson
A lover of all things creepy crawly, Casey is an entomologist with a background in wildlife and conservation biology. Casey works as a research associate at the University of Rhode Island, from where she earned her M.S. in 2022. She is particularly interested in plant-pollinator interactions and searching for new state records of native bees. In her spare time, she enjoys frolicking in tick-infested meadows with her dog, watching and photographing bugs, and wandering about in open-world video games.

Dr. Katie Burns
Katie is an ecologist with an extensive background in insect pollination research. She has worked on pollinator projects all across the country, in addition to earning her Ph.D. at University College Dublin in 2021, where she researched Irish pollinators. She is now a freelance interpretive naturalist and stay-at-home mom. When she’s not busy caring for her kiddo and doggo, she enjoys sweating in saunas, ripping invasive plants out of the ground, and dancing to live music.
